Setting up Time Machine server on Ubuntu Server

sudo apt-get install netatalk avahi-daemon
mkdir /TimeCapsule/
sudo chown {username} /TimeCapsule/
sudo mv /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default.old
sudo vim /etc/netatalk/AppleVolumes.default
:DEFAULT: options:upriv,usedots
/home/danny/tm "Time Capsule" options:tm volsizelimit:1000000 allow:{username}

 

sudo service netatalk restart

“Connect to server…” (or ⌘+K) afp://server.ip/

System Preferences > Time Machine, “Select Disk…”

Make your server appear as Xserve in Finder:

sudo vim /etc/avahi/services/afpd.service
<?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?>
<!DOCTYPE service-group SYSTEM "avahi-service.dtd">

<service-group>
    <name replace-wildcards="yes">%h</name>

    <service>
        <type>_device-info._tcp</type>
        <port>0</port>
        <txt-record>model=Xserve</txt-record>
    </service>
</service-group>
sudo service avahi-daemon restart
